Circle of Security Parenting Program

Circle of Security

8 week program facilitated by clinical psychologist

Circle of Security

This program places secure attachment at the forefront for building a strong relationship between child and caregiver.

Mother and Baby | Circle of Security Parenting
Unaddressed attachment problems in early childhood has been linked to higher rates of anti-social behaviour in the future. This program believes that establishing secure attachments will alleviate the stress and discomfort that parents feel when their children are going through emotional distress.

The Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) program provides caregivers with language to understand what they are seeing in their child. It is a cross-cultural program that has been well researched to facilitate these changes. This program understands that all parents want the best for their children. It gives opportunities to exercise and grow this desire.

The COSP intervention increase caregivers awareness of their children’s needs and whether their own responses meet those needs. By increasing awareness, parents will know to respond in ways that promote secure attachment and exploration of the environment. In this shift from mind-blindness to seeing what is hidden in plain sight lies the potential to break problematic attachment patterns, passed from one generation to the next, that can promote healthy relationships throughout a child’s lifespan.

The overall goals of Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) are:

  • Improve caregiver’s capacity to identify attachment needs

  • Increase caregiver's ability to read young children's cues

  • Improve caregiver’s capacity to regulate stressful emotional states (their own and their children’s)

  • Teach caregiver’s capacity to provide comfort when their child is in distress

  • Increase caregiver's capacity to pause, self-reflect

  • Reduce negative attributions of the parent regarding the child's motivations

  • Increase caregiver's ability to recognize ruptures in the relationship and facilitate repairs
